Who can I sponsor?
You can sponsor your spouse, common-law partner or dependent children.
Am I Eligible to Sponsor my Spouse, Partner or Child?
To be eligible, you must be:
1- at least 18 years old
2- a Canadian Citizen or Permanent resident
3- able to prove that you’re not receiving social assistance for reasons other than a disability
4- able to provide for the basic needs of any persons you want to sponsor
You may not be eligible to sponsor your spouse, partner, or child if you:
were sponsored by a spouse or partner and you became a permanent resident less than 5 years ago
are still financially responsible for a previous spouse or partner that you sponsored
Who Is Considered Your Spouse?
Your spouse can be either sex and must be legally married to you AND at least 18 years old.
Who Is Considered Your Common-Law Partner?
A Common-Law Partner is a person who;
isn’t legally married to you
can be either sex
is at least 18 years old
has been living with continuously for 1 year in a conjugal relationship, without any long periods apart
Who Is Considered Your Dependent Children?
To qualify as a dependant child, they must meet both of these requirements:
they’re under 22 years old
they don’t have a spouse or common-law partner
