International students who participate in fully online post-secondary programs and have valid study permits can apply for the three-year open work permit after graduation.
To be entitled for this permit, the program of study should be PGWP-eligible and must have begun between spring 2020 and fall 2021. Those programs which were already in progress in March 2020 are also eligible.
PGWP can become a gateway to permanent residence. The students who study at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) in Canada can work for any employer, while they are holding the PGWP. This work experience then leads to a better standing in the application process for permanent residence.
